Latvia's foreign minister has accused Russia of gross human rights abuses in Crimea. Edgar Rinkevics said in a statement that the treatment of Crimean Tatars by the Russian-backed authorities in the peninsula is "in essence ethnic cleansing."
Tatars, who make up about 10 percent of the peninsula's population, have complained of discrimination and harassment since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in March.
Since then, Russian authorities have banned many demonstrations held by the Tatar community and moved to marginalize their leadership.
