Russia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aleksei Meshkov, says that a European Union proposal to launch a Russian-language television channel is not a good idea. ((EU))Meshkov told Russian media that the proposed channel, which is planned to counter Russian propaganda, would damage free speech.

((VILNIUS))The proposal comes as Russia heightens its media war against the West. Latvia and Lithuania, which are home to a significant minority of Russian speakers, have complained that Russian media is spreading false information and trying to discredit Western governments.
