Germany says resolving the conflict in east Ukraine is key to eastern European security. Nearly two years of fighting in the Donbas region has claimed some 9,000 lives. A recently-renewed ceasefire has had some success. But Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed militants blame each other for daily violations.

Germany is one of the major powers pushing for a resolution. Berlin has hosted a number of round of peace talks between the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister:
"Because of limitations this conflict now takes two years. With the efforts that I said in my initial comments, we want to not only reach a situation where a truce is respected, but under the conditions of a ceasefire manage to work out a solution to the conflict. I believe that is the biggest security contribution that we can achieve in this part of the world."

Part of the West's response to Russia aggression has been an increased NATO presence in Eastern Europe. Poland will host a summit of the US-led military alliance in July. It is expected to press for more NATO forces on its soil and in former Soviet states.
