Hromadske invited Edward Lucas, a prominent British journalist and an expert on modern Russia, for a discussion about the Ukrainian conflict and Russia’s role in it.

Edward Lucas is a journalist working for The Economist, a Senior Fellow and Contributing Editor at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and the author of several books. His work titled "The New Cold War: Putin's Russia and the Threat to the West" was first published in 2008. Since then, Russia has become more authoritarian and corrupt, and has annexed Crimea and occupied a part of Donbas.

The main theme of Edward Lucas speech was how to understand and confront contemporary Russia. “If you think Putin turned nasty and Russia suddenly became a problem, that is because you were not paying attention,” says Lucas.

What instruments does the West have to confront the aggressive country both in diplomatic and military fields? Do EU sanctions against Russia in response to the annexation of Crimea work? And what mistakes have been made towards Putin’s regime? Here you can find an expert's profound explanation of everything you need to know about the Ukrainian conflict and Russia’s role in it.
